2026 - The Year of the Pause

What if this year is not about the next step but it's about the pause. What if instead of trying to figure out what is next, I stop to enjoy exactly where I am. What if instead of muli-tasking, I learn how to singe task once again. What if instead of searching for adventure far away from home, I find the adventure right in my backyard.

Multi-tasking used to be a flex, at least for me. I prided myself on getting as much done as could in a given amount of time. But somewhere along the line, my life became so full with doing everything that I stopped really enjoying anything simple anymore...always in search of the next adventure. I do believe that technology plays a big part in it. I believe that technology has a place in this world but I also believe that it has taken over in places it shouldn't and I am ready to reclaim it.

My goal is to slow down and to be intentional with what I am doing. My phone is going to be the first thing and I have started the journey. I disabled all notification from the social media apps and apps in general except for emails and text. I want my phone to be...a phone again. I already bought a watch so that I don't grab my phone when I need to check the time. I have invested in more clocks around the house for the same reason. I have my alarm clock that sits on my nightstand so that I can change over my alarm from my phone to the alarm clock. I would like to start using a camera of some sort instead of my phone. I am simply trying to get my phone back to single tasking as well.

I want to learn some of the grandma hobbies that require focus. The constant scrolling makes me feel crazy. Our minds were never meant to take in all this information. I would like to have a bread recipe by the end of 2026. I want to whip up a loaf of bread without having to look a recipe. And I want to do some sort of gardening this spring/summer/fall. I want to read more and watch tv less. I started crocheting again and I love it. I want that to be a hobby that I can pick up regularly. I want to learn needlepoint or cross stitch. I want to enjoy coloring and writing again. This world is all about emails, text, lists on apps and virtual calendars. All those things have a place but I want to go back to snail mail (this is my plan for 2026 birthday presents), use paper lists, and I already use paper calendars. I want to learn more....intentionally.

Although DVD players are technology technically, I want to go back to watch TV on a DVD player. I was very frustrated over Christmas with all my streaming services and I couldn't watch Elf without having to pay $10 on Amazon. I pay for some subscriptions, Rob pays for some, I have Apple TV with Jose and Disney with Larissa. Each subscription with it's own limitation so that you have to have multiple to watch everything. I guess my stronger feelings are not so much about technology as it is about our lives being online and they can be taken down at any time. The system could crash anytime and we would have nothing left. I want my life to have tangible stuff again. I only want to be online intentionally. Same with music. We gave up our tapes for CD's and then our CD's for online subscriptions. A subscription that if it decides to take something off or simply ceases to exist, I have nothing left. Are subscriptions convenient? Yes. Until they are not.

So I have been going down this nostalgic journey. And on this journey, I started to bring some of the old things that feel like home back into my life. Things that others would call old or outdated. We live in a consumerism world. The new stuff is built to break but the old stuff is still in circulation because it was built to last. So I will slowly trade out the cheap stuff that I currently have with older, more beautiful, more full of character and more durable stuff...one item at a time.

I know this sounds crazy from the girl who spent last year decluttering and now I want physical possessions again. The thing about decluttering is that it's the same motto as a tiny house. The goal is not to get rid of everything, the goal is to be surrounded by only the things you need, the things you use and the things you love. I want to make my house a home again. Somewhere along the line, I was just trying to make my house look nice.

Dumb Home & Slowing down

Enough already with the smart house. You know that I want? I want a dumb home. I want reading nooks and millworks and thoughtful collections...
